Mindset for Career Transitions

Transitioning careers, especially as a lawyer, can feel like learning to swim in the deep end — a bit terrifying, but mostly thrilling when it happens, and absolutely possible with the right mindset.

I once had a client, a seasoned litigator, who felt stuck in a rut. He dreaded his job. The spark was gone, and he wanted to reignite it.

He started looking at alternative careers and hit a mental and emotional roadblock. His usual confidence disappeared, and he felt adrift at sea. Sounds familiar, right?

Here’s the golden nugget I gave him and now give you. Mindset matters.

First, embrace a Growth Mindset. Understand that your skills and knowledge aren’t set in stone.

Like your law degree, they can be learned, polished, and improved over time. Challenges? They are your best friends! They’re opportunities for growth, not roadblocks.

Second, Cultivate Curiosity. Be inquisitive and eager to learn about new sectors, industries, and roles. Dive into an area unknown to you.

You might stumble upon a new passion, an uncharted territory that could light up your career path brighter than a 4th of July fireworks display.

Third, Practice Open-Mindedness. I get it. You’re a lawyer, and you’re darn good at it. But that doesn’t mean your skills are only applicable in the courtroom.

Think broader. A whole world outside could benefit from your legal expertise and problem-solving skills.

It’s easy to box ourselves into the ‘lawyer’ identity, but you’re more than just a lawyer. You’re a mediator, negotiator, and problem solver; above all, you’re a badass ready to conquer whatever career path you set your mind to.

So, gear up, and let’s show them what a lawyer can do, in and outside of court!
